Japanese word “KAGE” means shadow, which would recall the past events, the insubstantial memories, or the images projected by picture or footage. In old Japanese, this word was also used as the meaning of “light”, so we can say that has the double meaning. Shimura, in the process of tracing the memories of Tone River, gave his mind to the backgrounds of women came to Sawara town by "Yomeiri-boat" a long time ago. In this exhibition, we're going to release the new film works “Mizu-kagami” sheding light on the women’s memories, which the artist went to see old women personally and carefully listened to their telling memories. Also, you can enjoy one of his best-known works “Airing Book”.
* In Japanese water town like Sawara, brides used to go to the wedding ceremony by boat ”Yomeiri-boat” instead of horse or on foot because using boat was the daily means of transportation at that time. “Yomeiri-boat” is the symbolic scenes in the traditional custom of wedding in Japan.

Nobuhiro Shimura
Born in 1982 in Tokyo, Japan. Currently lives and works in Chiba, Japan. Completed his master’s degree in Imaging Arts and Sciences at Musashino Art University in 2007.From 2016 to 2018, he was a visiting researcher at INALCO (Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales) in Paris under the overseas study program for upcoming artists of the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Shimura has created a number of video installations that employ images of everyday objects and landscapes. In recent years he has been engaging in film works with a documentary approach based on his fieldwork. He has been involved in projects that focus on social issues and histories that are difficult to visualize from a local perspective.
From waking up in the morning until going to sleep at night, even though nothing special happened in your daily life, when you think back on the flow of the day, the trivial things you want to tell someone come to your mind.
However, it is unexpectedly difficult to “tell people” = “express” such trivial things.
In this workshop, together with Nobuhiro Shimura, an artist who creates video works, each participant will focus on the “colors” that left an impression in their daily lives, and try to create four-frame storyboards according to the flow of the day. Then, our focus is on “expressing”.
When it comes to “color”, the white that I imagine is surely different from the white that you do. That's why we dare not use “color” in storyboards and draw with black pencils.
By shaping an ordinary day based on memories, telling people about it, and having them imagine it, you would experience that remembering can also be an expression.
